, Hong Kongs Tsing Ma Bridge is a national landmark of truly monumental proportions. As the largest suspension bridge in the world to carry rail and road traffic, the superstructure built at a cost of HK$7.14 billion also attracts bridge enthusiasts from across the globe to witness the panoramic views atop the overpass and its illuminated facade at dusk. A revolutionary engineering feat by any measure, the 2.2km long Tsing Ma Bridge was opened to the public in 1997. With 206 metre high towers and a 62m clearance supporting the mega structure it is hard to imagine that the main span of the bridge measures a whopping 1377 metres. Used mainly as the most convenient connection between the airport on Lantau Island and Hong Kong city, the bridge is a multipurpose transportation powerhouse with a six-lane open roadway, two railway lines and a two lane carriageway enclosed underneath.

Suspended by massive gravity anchorages placed on either side of the overpass the concrete structures delve into the bedrock on the Ma Wan and Tsing Yi islands. With the Tsing Yi anchorage weighing nearly 200,000 tonnes the Ma Wan Anchorage is the heavier of the two at 250,000 tonnes. Built according to the visionary design of Mott MacDonald the bridge inaugurated by former British PM Margaret Thatcher is best viewed from the Lantau Link Visitor Centre and Viewing Platform located in northwest Tsing Yi Island adjacent to the landmarks Tsing Yi corner. Visitors can also view photographs and models of the Ting Kau Bridge and Lantau Link at the locale. Open from 10am to 5pm on weekdays and till 6pm on weekends the Scenery Viewing Platform also affords views of the Kap Shui Mun Bridge and Ting Kau Bridge which have also earned positions in the worlds Three Mosts" list. Frequented by professional shutterbugs and amateur photographers alike the spectacular scenery filled with urban landscapes seen from atop the bridge and viewing platform are some of the best on Hong Kong Island.
