Discovered A Gene Associated With Aggressive Growth Of Liver Cancer

Liver cancer is rather difficult to diagnose at an early stage

, but with the help of DNA analysis it's possible. In addition, this method allows determining the presence of the ill-fated carcinoma, even in those patients who suffer from hepatitis B and C.

Scientists say that most cancers can not be determined in the usual way, until the tumor is not a mortal danger, but at this stage medicine is powerless to fight the disease. Approximately half of patients who suffer from cancer, died due to delayed diagnosis of the tumor.

Researchers have found in the DNA of a human gene that inhibits growth of cancerous cells. Moreover, this gene helps to identify liver cancer for 9 years ... before it could make the traditional methods of diagnosis.

Employees of Virginia Commonwealth University have identified a gene that plays a key role in the development of liver cancer. This discovery opens new possibilities in the development of targeted control methods of highly disease.

Hepatocellular carcinoma, HCC or liver cancer is the fifth most common type of cancer and the third leading cause of cancer deaths in the world. Its treatment includes chemotherapy, chemoembolization, ablation, and proton-beam therapy. Organ transplantation requires a better chance to cure patients with small tumors and significantly related to liver pathology.

In a study published online in the February issue of Journal of Clinical Investigation, the authors reported that AEG-1 gene (astrocyte elevated gene-1) plays a key role in regulating the development of HCC in the sequences of cellular models. Exploring the human tumor cells in the liver, the researchers found that the expression of AEG-1 is gradually increased in proportion to the aggressiveness of cancer.

Using biochip technology, they found that the AEG-1 enhances expression of genes related to cancer of the liver, including the onset of the disease, metastasis, resistance to chemotherapy, the formation of new blood vessels and aging. According to lead researcher Devanand Sarkar, this phenomenon is characterized more than 90% of the samples of tumor cells compared with normal liver cells.

Previous studies have shown that the expression of AEG-1 is very low in normal cells or tissues, such as breast, prostate and brain. However, in tumor cells of these organs the expression of AEG-1 is significantly increased.

Surgical removal of the liver can be effective in the treatment of cancer of the body and must be considered as one of the options for treatment of patients with multiple tumors or vascular complications.
