Discovering the Truth about What Causes a Hemorrhoid

Discovering the Truth about What Causes a Hemorrhoid

What exactly is a hemorrhoid? You know that it is something that forms down there that may cause itch, pain, and discomfort, but do you know what it is exactly and why it happens?

There is really not a single way to define what hemorrhoids are. Oftentimes called as piles, they are basically swollen veins in the anal area. However, did you know that these piles are actually present in everyone? Yes, you have them too! Actually, they are masses of tissue found in the anal canal. The anal canal is the four-centimeter passageway of stools from the rectum to the anus. This is where these masses of tissue are located. Aside from being simple tissue clumps, they also have blood vessels. They are made up of elastic fiber too.

So basically, a hemorrhoid is a normal part of everyone. It is not supposed to be considered an abnormality nor is it a disease on its own. However, it can develop a condition which will turn it into both. When they become swollen, they become a problem.

There is no exact reason why piles become swollen although there are some theories about it. For example, one theory says that when a person does not include adequate amount of fiber in his or her diet, he or she can develop the condition. You see, lack of fiber may lead to constipation. Constipation leads to prolonged toilet use, which in turn will result to chronic straining of the anus. When you are constipated, it is extra hard to do a bowel movement, right? You tend to put a lot of pressure in the anal area to push, causing the hemorrhoid toswell.

Another factor which causes the swelling of piles is diarrhea. Just like constipation, frequent bowel movement also damages the veins. Although the stools are relatively soft, there is a frequent need to push and pressure the anus to excrete, leading to swollen veins.

The third theory about what causes piles is pretty simple and may even sound mundane: wrong sitting position on the toilet seat. When you are sitting the wrong way, it may be harder for the poop to come out. Again, the harder the poop comes out, the more strained your anus becomes. As a general rule, you should sit on the toilet bowl properly; exerting a little effort to lean forward to facilitate easier movement of the bowels.

Fourthly, it is not only wrong sitting position but wrong wiping too. If you wipe too hard or too long, you may damage some veins in the anal area. First, you should lessen the need to wipe extra hard by evacuating the contents well. Second, it is best that you use a damp tissue when cleaning up.

Finally, a swollen hemorrhoid may also be a result of obesity. When you are on the heavy side of the scale, you put a lot of pressure on your anal region especially when you sit down. This, in turn, may cause the condition. To prevent this from happening, you should try harder to lose weight.
