Discussing Todays Flight Simulation Software

The world of aviation can be quite a closed circuit

, and if you are thinking about and training to become a pilot, it can seem at first impenetrable. A lot of that is to do with all the complex engineering involved; some of it is simply a matter of terminology. Once you have a sense of what to expect from your pilot training, the whole process should seem less daunting.

Flight simulators range from simple Part-Task Trainers (PTTs) these include comparatively low-cost training devices such as a Flight and Navigation Procedures Trainer (FNPT) and a Flight Training Device (FTD) to Full Flight Simulators (FFS) with comprehensive aerodynamic and systems modelling. You can see that acronyms are a large part of the data that will eventually have to become second nature to a pilot.

Here are some of the more basic flight simulation devices currently in use. A little like doing the cockpit drill when learning to drive for the first time, rookie pilots will learn the initial mechanics of the cockpit in a Cockpit Procedures Trainer (CPT). This is used for cockpit familiarization and to practise basic cockpit procedures.

An Aviation Training Device (ATD) is used for basic training of flight concepts and procedures, while a Basic Instrument Training Device (BITD) focuses on general flight procedures. Similarly, a Flight and Navigation Procedures Trainer (FNPT) is used for generic flight training. Although basic, this device demands a comprehensive flight model, and many environmental effects must be provided.

After this, things get a bit more advanced. Firstly, there is the Integrated Procedures Trainer (IPT). This provides a fully simulated cockpit in a 3D spatial environment that combines the use of multiple touch-sensitive screens with simulated panels; these are the same size as the actual aircraft panels.

A Flight Training Device (FTD), as mentioned above, is used for both general and aircraft-specific flight training. Such a device requires comprehensive flight and environmental models. High level FTDs require visual systems but not so fully-fledged as a Full Flight Simulator (FFS), which is used for aircraft-specific flight training. All FFS require Out-The-Window (OTW) visual systems and a motion platform.

You may well not encounter this if you are training to be a commercial pilot, but the very high-tech-sounding Full Mission Simulator (FMS) is a term used by the military to refer to a flight simulator capable of providing training in all aspects of an operational mission in whichever aircraft will be flown. You will have to enrol in military aviation training to hear the end of that story.
