Diseases Associated With Being Overweight Or Obese
What is the difference between being over-weight and obese? Overweight is when the body has extra weight due to either muscle, bone density, fat and /or simply water. Conversely, obesity is having a large amount of extra body fat. In America and now also becoming a global problem we are growing bigger. Why is that so, well probably because of lack of exercise and proper nutrition. Restaurants and fast food chains have now been placing nutritional labels on the foods we buy. Insurance companies now offer discounts for its members to join health clubs. Many schools have eliminated certain foods and soft drinks from their menus. We need to allow our kids to go outside more to play and get fresh air and sunshine to promote a healthy level of vitamin D. Even though we are now more aware of the health dangers of being over-weight and obese we still have a lot of work ahead of us to promote healthy eating and exercise. I will like to discuss a few diseases associated with being overweight and obese and the possible health dangers to our organs.
Coronary Heart Disease (CHD) is a condition whereby a substance builds up inside the arteries referred to as plaque. The arteries supply the heart with oxygen-rich blood. Plaque is made up of fat, cholesterol, calcium or of any other substance found in the blood stream. The affects of having plaque causes the coronary arteries to narrow or block causing a reduction in the blood flow to the heart muscle leading to angina or a heart attack, Your chances for a heart attack increase when your BMI or body mass index increases. With this condition the heart cannot pump sufficient amounts of blood needed for survival.
High Blood Pressure. Is a condition which forces the blood to be pushed though the arteries as the heart pumps out blood.this pressure rises and stays high over time causing damage to the body,
Stroke. By having plaque build up in the arteries you can cause a rupture causing blood to clot near the brain. This blockage of blood and oxygen from the brain cause a stroke to occur.
Type 2 Diabetes. This is caused by the body's blood glucose or blood sugar to be too high. A non-diabetic individual's body is able to break down food particulars into glucose and distribute it throughout the cells in the body which in turn converts to energy. This cells uses a hormone called insulin to turn this into energy.Conversely, a diabetic's body cannot use insulin properly. Initially, the body reacts by making vase amounts of insulin. Over time, it can no longer produce sufficient amounts of insulin to control the level of the blood sugar.Diabetes is a leading cause of early death, CHD, stroke, kidney disease and blindness.
Abnormal Blood Fats. Again an overweight or obese individual runs the risks of having abnormal levels of blood fat. Triglycerides and LDL or bad cholesterol and low levels of good or HDL. When these levels are not within the normal range you are at risk for heart diseases.
