Dishwashers - Tips For Cleaning And Usage
This is a short guide to getting the best out of your dishwasher with cleaning and usage tips for maintaining your appliance.
Usage: Make sure that your plates have been thoroughly scraped of food before putting into the dishwasher, as scraps of food can travel around and there is a risk of scratching your glass and china. If you are not planning on starting the dishwasher straight away, then rinse all your plates before putting them in, otherwise your machine will start to smell.
The best practise is to put the dirtiest items in the bottom, and the least dirty items into the top of the appliance. Make sure that none of your glass or plates are touching, otherwise this runs the risk of chipping and cracking them. Make sure that you don't overload the cutlery basket, and mix up the different items of cutlery so that they dont end up nesting inside each other and not getting washed proerly. Always make sure that knives are placed in pointing downwards.
When deciding on a detergent to use, it is best to go with powder, as the amount used can be varied, and it is also cheaper. It is generally more economic to only use your dishwasher when it is fully loaded, however, many models sold nowadays include a small load programme in their settings. When the dishwasher is ready to be emptied, always unload from the bottom tray up, as this prevents dripping from the upper tray falling on to the load below.
Cleaning: Dishwashers should be cleaned at least weekly, to keep it in good shape. Use a damp cloth to clean the interior seals, and also wipe the outside if needed. Also make sure that you clean the filters at least once a week. Every month, take out the filter basket and wash in hot water and soap.
If the spray arm gets clogged up, then remove it from the dishwasher and use a toothpick to clear any deposits or limescale, and wash it in hot water.
Descaling: A cheap way to descale your dishwasher is to put a cup of white vinegar into the otherwise empty lower basket, and set the machine going. This should work as long as the machine is not in too bad of a state. If it is very dirty, then probably the best solution is to use a proper dishwasher cleaner, which will not only clean your machine superbly, but will also leave it smelling nice and fresh too.
Hopefully this guide will come in use and given you a few tips on how to get the most out of your dishwasher.
