Disney Is Family Entertainment
Walt Disney in the 21st century is a name synonymous to animation
, theme parks and TV channels. The company behind the brand has been a brainchild of two brothers, Walt and Roy Disney, and from its humble origins in October 1923 it now owns one of the largest studios in Hollywood. The Walt Disney Company almost 8 decades later has evolved into an industry leader in family entertainment.
Animation
Walt Disney, the man, is among his many achievements, a film producer who has paved the way for animation to be a favorite alternative medium of storytelling. Since the release of its first full-length animated feature Snow White and the Seven Dwarfs in 1937, there have been more than a score of materials from classical literature that have been translated into an animated adaptation. To sustain the pioneering efforts of its founder, Walt Disney, the company, maintained its traditional animation niche while branching into computer generated imagery (CGI) technology with the acquisition of Pixar Animation Studios in 2006. Though it remained a separate entity post merger, the California-based computer animation studio that has been behind successful movies such as Toy Story, A Bug's Life, Finding Nemo and Monsters Inc. among others, continues to join forces with Disney since its first collaboration, Cars (and who doesn't love disney characters like that), in June of 2006.
Theme Parks
What Walt Disney has triggered in the imagination through film, he has made tangible in the form of theme parks. Disneyland opened in California on July 17, 1955 and has since entertained close to half a billion guests. Its Florida counterpart, World Disney World followed suit on October 1, 1971. Initially known as the Magic Kingdom, this Orlando theme park, considered as the largest in the world, has among its attractions EPCOT, Disney-MGM Studios and Disney's Animal Kingdom in the 20,000 acre or so utopia. Outside the United States, this magical world is making its presence felt in Japan as Tokyo Disneyland, and in France as Disneyland Paris.
Cable TV Channels
For all his efforts towards innovation, Walt Disney who passed away in 1966 failed to witness his company expand its sphere to include television, considered by many as the babysitter of the 21st century. Launched in 1983, the Disney Channel is present in the homes of more than 100 countries the world over, entertaining a viewership within the 2 to 12 year old age range. Also located in California, the network provides round-the-clock entertainment under its brand names Playhouse Disney and the former Toon Disney, now changed to Disney XD.
Walt Disney or simply Disney, whether with reference to the man or the company, is a pioneer in family oriented entertainment and the brand remains to be a leader in whatever medium it gets into.
