Disorders Of The Digestive System
The digestive system is one of the most vital systems of the body
. It facilitates the absorption and generation of energy for the entire body and allows us to function in the manner that we do. All food that we eat reaches the digestive system for final breakdown into energy. The waste material that is not utilized by our body is finally expelled in the form of feces or urine.
If the digestive system is not functioning properly, there can be several complications in the body. The digestive system consists of a number of organs and a problem with any of these organs can shut down the entire system.
Here are some of the common problems of the digestive system:
* Malignant cell formations in the colon or the rectum are typically known as cancers. These cancers of the colon and the rectum have become very common of late. Since the colon and the rectum make up the large intestines, cancers in either of these organs can affect the large intestines severely. These cancers are one of the major causes of death in the world.
* Cancers in the stomach are known as gastric cancers. A person who has H. pylori infection is at a higher risk of developing stomach cancer. Other risk factors for developing these cancers are the consumption of fried and smoked foods, excessive intake of salt and spices, and excessive consumption of foods that contain large quantities of nitrates and nitrites.
* One of the most common digestive problems is diarrhea. Diarrhea is a watery kind of stool that is passed with increased frequency when a person is suffering from certain digestive disorders.
* Another minor though uncomfortable disorder of the stomach is flatulence. Flatulence can occur because of the breakdown of certain foods that release excessive amount of gases in the stomach.
* In a lot of cases a person may develop an acidic reaction in the stomach due to excess of digestive juices. Excessive buildup of gastric acid and other digestive juices in the stomach may sometimes flow back in to the esophagus and sometimes even reach the mouth. These conditions are known as heartburn and acid reflux.
* An infection in the liver can cause inflammation. As the infection grows, cell damage may increase. Such a disorder of the liver is known as hepatitis. There are two types of hepatitis, known as hepatitis A and hepatitis B.
* A person may also get afflicted by a severe disorder known as inflammatory bowel disease. This disease requires attention from the doctor.
* Constipation is also a common disorder that is today increasingly widespread because of faulty dietary factors. It can also be caused by other conditions and is basically the failure to evacuate the bowels, or irregular bowel movements. This condition can lead to other problems like piles, anal fissures, or fecal impaction.
