"Easel" may be an unfortunate choice of words to describe display easels, since the word carries connotations of the basic artist's stand. In the industry, these easels cover the whole gamut of presentation stands. Virtually all the different kinds of stands that hold objects upright for viewing are "display easels."

Once you understand just how broad the definition is, you can also begin to grasp just how many designs and types of display stands there are and how many uses they can be put to. They are manufactured in a range of heights, from as small as four inches to as high as well over six feet. They can be fully adjustable, foldable, collapsible or simply free-standing and semi-permanent.

There are several types of pedestals that display easels stand on, depending on the use, the load and the environment they are designed for. The bifold "V" shaped base, three-legged, four-legged and circular weighted base are common types of bases.

The "V" shaped base is a clever design that rests on the three corners of the "V." Often, the point of the Vee is hinged, so that the stand can be folded flat. These bifold stands are made out of many different materials, with the wooden ones being some of the most popular for decorative displays. They range in price depending on size, complexity of design and the type of wood that is used. Everything from ordinary pine to exotic species of wood are used. Some of the exotic timber models look like fine pieces of furniture.

In the minds of many, tripod easels are synonymous with display easels. As with other styles, these stands are made out of many different materials and come in a variety of sizes. They also come in a multitude of designs. Some can be collapsed to a fraction of their erect size. Some are simply hinged so the back leg can be folded in or out. The front of the easel might have parallel legs or they may taper to an upside-down "Vee." The most complex designs have a number of adjustment options.

Most tabletop easels are of fixed size, though this is not always the case. You can see these in commercial applications everywhere, holding stacks of promotional materials. In the home, they are very popular for displaying photographs or plates. More specialty applications include sheet music stands and lectern stands.

While these examples serve to show the many uses presentation stands can be put to and the variety of styles they come in, they still only barely scratch the surface. When you consider the enormous range of designer easels, the list grows exponentially further. These decorative easels can make something as bland as a blackboard look interesting.
