Disputing The Social Stigmas Of Greek Letter Societies

There is a stigma that exists when thinking about fraternities and sororities of today

. The media and entertainment industries have painted those who walk around proudly in their Greek letter shirts to be less academic and more about having a good time and partying. But for most of those wearing Greek hoodies, that couldn't be farther from the truth. Greek affiliation can have more of a positive effect on college students than previously thought, not only in terms of acquiring social and leadership skills, but also feelings of self-worth and higher self-esteem.

Just wearing their Greek letter shirts along with fellow members of the society can give a college student a great boon of confidence and acceptance. This can go a long way in preparing them for their future, as well as giving them a circle of friends and confidants they can lean on if they need to. It's like having an extended family, and they'll be able to wear Greek hoodies proclaiming their society's letters for the rest of their lives.

Before students can obtain their Greek letter shirts, there are certain criteria and rituals that need to be performed. Interested students need to attend a week of recruitment activities, more commonly called "rush week", where they get to know the different members and different societies on their campus. At the end of this time, those already wearing Greek hoodies give out invitations to selected individuals to join their society. These invitations can be given out to anyone who meets their criteria, whether that is by academic merit or through other achievements.

The new pledges most often have to go through some sort of ritual after accepting the invitation, and this is where a lot of the stigma about those wearing Greek hoodies comes from. Though there have been cases where new members undergo a form of hazing, mostly these secret rituals and initiation rites are meant to serve as a way of cementing and forming bonds with their fellow pledges and older members. Only after being accepted can new pledges proudly wear their Greek letter shirts.

The privilege that one associates with wearing Greek letter shirts also comes with responsibilities. Many Greek letter organizations have strict guidelines that all members must follow, such as maintaining a certain grade point average and fulfilling a certain amount of volunteer hours. In fact, philanthropy is a large part of the society's obligations and duties, and they consistently fundraise and support charities and causes of their choice. All members are required to do their part for these charities.

Another stigma about fraternities and sororities that's prevalent is that they are biased and selective about who gets into their society, based on looks or other physical attributes. However, this is not the case for most in Greek hoodies. Members are varied and come from all types of backgrounds or ethnicities, where achievements and ability are prized over physical appearance. Indeed, being a Greek can lead to becoming a well-rounded member of society.
