Distance Learning University Degree - The Pros & Cons
Distance learning university degree programs have come along way from the correspondence courses of the past
. With the advent of the internet, chatrooms, forums, email etc. - online distance education has become a highly convenient way to get a higher education anywhere in the world you have a web connection.
Type Of Courses Available
It is not just academic programs such as business or arts degrees can be pursued online. Vocational programs such as computer training and electrician courses can be partially or fully done on the web. Even a nursing degree can be partially pursued online.
Some Advantages
Imagine for a minute, busy parents, busy professionals who want to improve their education but don't have the time to attend a campus. Or young people who want to get work experience whilst getting an education.
Online distance learning is great opportunity for these people because they can learn at their own pace and at their won convenience. Furthermore they don't have to spend time and money going to and fro university.
Potential Drawbacks & Solutions
One of the major disadvantages of distance learning university degree programs is their level of acceptance in comparison to campus-based degrees. Although many surveys show that learning online has become increasingly acceptable to potential employers, concerns still exist.
There are some employers who believe online college courses are not as vigorous as campus-based degrees because of the quality of teaching and lack of accreditation. There are others who believe there are no major differences between both campus and web-based degrees.
The key to alleviating these concerns is to only pursue a distance learning university degree with an appropriately accredited institution and/or accredited program. There is nothing more worthless that a degree that is unaccredited.
The next thing you need to do is to go to a job interview ready to defend your online qualification. You could mention that studying online shows discipline and motivation since online students are required to work unsupervised.
Alternatively, you could mention that studying online while holding a full-time job shows just how well you can handle pressure and how committed you are to being the best in your field.
Take Action
According to the Sloan Consortium, over 4.6 million students were taking at least one online course during the fall 2008 term; a 17 percent increase over the number reported the previous year.
Improving your career prospects via web-based educational opportunities is something you should seriously consider if your lack the time to go to a traditional school. Many people have taken advantage of online education and have reaped the rewards. Now you can too
