The valve stem is one of the popular ones, I suppose. It is can be said that a valve stem is a self-contained valve which opens to admit gas to a chamber, such as air to inflate a tire. A Schrader valve consists of a valve stem into which a poppet valve is threaded with a spring attached. It is also called an American valve. This kind of valve stem is seen virtually on all automobile tires and, especially in America, some kinds of wider rimmed bicycle tires. Besides, the Schrader valves of varying diameters are used in refrigeration and air conditioning systems, plumbing, fueling injection engines and so on, as it leads the user to have initiative to remove and attach the hose while in use.

A wood valve equals to a Dunlop valve. It is also named as an English valve for its previous popularity in Great Britain. It is a kind of valve stem which is widely used on bicycle tires, especially on low to medium priced bicycles. And the Presta valve is another similar kind. But it is normally only employed on bicycles.

Apart from the above types, there are some other valves used only in certain regions or for limited purposes. For example, a Regina valve is mostly being used in Italy which is similar to a Presta. Referring to this term, a removable cap on a valve stem embedded in the tire rim is fitted which is different from an inflator stem. In this case, when inflating the tire, the cap should be firstly removed through the help typically with a coin. Then a "portable" dedicated inflator stem is screwed onto the valve stem.
