Diwali Sweet Hampers - A Great Gift!

As soon as the month of Diwali approaches, there is a slight nip in the air and the

cool winds start sweeping in from the snow clad Himalayas and bring the temperature of the plains down significantly. In the midst of this pleasant weather, many fair grounds are taken over by various NGOs, cultural organizations and civil society organizations for holding Diwali melas. Children and adults alike are attracted to these melas.

There are rides for the kids and tasty food and refreshments for the entire family. Nowadays there are also DJs playing music and strobe lighting to illuminate the dance floor. There are stalls selling decorative gift items, diyas, shopping bags and trinkets for the women and toys for children. Such melas organized on the residential society grounds further builds the spirit of community feeling during Diwali. Some of these melas are also organized through voluntary contributions by the members of residential societies.

Children often have their favourite things at these Diwali melas whether it is smart toys or simple pink colored candy floss or steaming and spicy choley kulchey or perhaps their favorite rides in the giant wheel of the Columbus swing.

Melas, fairs and nataks have been part of the rich oral tradition of India and are part of traditional forms of amusement for the public in India since millennia. Troops of jugglers and conjurers delight the young and old alike. Dancers and contortionists revolve at the top of long poles, swing clubs to and fro and tie themselves into knots!

Such community entertainment has been popular in urban, semi urban and rural India since times immemorial across all the communities of India. Such entertainment finds its peak expression in India during Diwali just like the various entertainments that are organized in western countries around Christmas.

In India, such gatherings and wandering troupes who show up during festivals are a part of the national landscape whether they tell stories of Rama and Sita or the bravery of Arjuna or Prithviraj Chauhan or the love stories and incredible feats of the brave Rajput chiefs or the days of Nurshirvan and the exploits of Suhrab and Rustam. The kings, princes and mythological heroes of Hindustan live again under the stars on the cold and clear nights before Diwali during the fairs and melas organized in the towns, cities, semi urban areas and villages of India. Diwali therefore in many ways shows the continuity of Indian traditions despite the rapid pace of technological and cultural change in the modern world.

Diwali Mithai is another attractive part of the Diwali festivities. Diwali sweet hampers are one of the smartest gift options that one can choose to give to ones loved ones on the occasion. Everyone loves to indulge their sweet tooth with some Diwali mithai. Now, you can send sweets to India for Diwali 2012.
