Do Freezing Temperatures Across Europe Indicate Another Ice Age Is Imminent

Heavy snow and sub-zero temperatures have been causing further disruption across many parts of Europe, wreaking havoc with transport networks.

Flights have been disrupted across Germany, France, the Netherlands and the UK, as airports fail to clear snow and ice from runways and aircraft.

Thousands of railway passengers spent a night stranded on trains as snow paralysed many rail and high-speed routes while road users were stranded in their cars as road networks become impassable.

Reports of deaths from the cold have been confirmed from countries including Poland, Russia, France and the UK, with most victims being the homeless or those under the influence of drugs or alcohol, or those with serious underlying medical conditions.

Questions are increasingly being raised as to why we are experiencing such harsh conditions, this early in the winter season.

With theories linked to global warming, the solar cycle and the recent high level of volcanic activity, no one seems to fully be able to explain what is causing the current extreme conditions, and those experienced at the beginning of the year across Europe.

Other theories suggest that the current cold snap is part of the Earth's long term cycle and that it could be entering a natural period of global cooling.

Whatever the reasons for the current conditions, early indications are that this winter could see much of Europe experiencing further record cold temperatures and continued heavy snow falls.

With this in mind, governments are working hard to minimize any further disruption to transport networks and cold related deaths.

Meanwhile scientists will be studying facts and figures to determine if the current cold weather conditions are a temporary blip or an indication of something more serious such as the return to an ice-age period.
