Do Hangover Cures Really Work?
The best cure is not to drink heavily in the first place
, but after a long week at work its understandable why some of society enjoy unwinding at a pub with their favourite tipple. And these days there are even more professed hangover cures than there are types of alcohol to consume and get drunk on, but do any of them really work? Whether you swear by hair of the dog, or a big glass of Berocca, or even bucket loads of green tea.
Most of us suffer hangovers after a night of heavy drinking and for many people they get worse as you get older, because as the bodys metabolism slows down it is less able to break down the alcohol. There are a few fortunate people who hardly suffer from hangovers at all but these are in the minority. So what can we do to prevent them?
Typically hangovers kick in two or three hours after the subject has stopped drinking and this is when the negative effects of alcohol come into play. It seriously dehydrates us. That pounding headache you suffer during the morning after? Thats the result of your brain shrinking away from your skull because its dehydrated. Other hangover symptoms include nausea, dizziness, exhaustion and extreme thirst, all of which can mainly be attributed to dehydration. The other major biological effect alcohol has on our bodies is the amount of urine it causes us to produce. Four drinks can make subjects generate up to a full litre of urine over a few hours time. This can irritate the stomach and promote it to manufacture increased amounts of acid, which can in turn be quite painful and give the subjects intense heartburn.
One thing you can do to reduce the extent of your hangover is to drink alcoholic beverages which contain the minimum amount of congeners. Congeners are by-products of the fermentation process. These are normally added to alter and arguably improve the taste or visual appearance of the drink. The alcoholic beverages that are mainly made of ethanol like vodka and gin, inflict less severe hangovers, than those containing lots of congeners like whisky and red wine for example.
The best thing to do is to drink some non-alcoholic beverages in-between the alcoholic ones, most preferably large glasses of water as these will help you stay hydrated and decrease the extent of the hangover. Consuming dry toast is also said to reduce the drop in your blood sugar levels. If you have nausea or a stomach ache many doctors recommend taking antacids, however warn against aspirin and paracetamol as the formers broken down by the stomach and the latter by the liver.
Try to limit the amount of drinks you have, and restrict yourself to one type. If you start the night on wine, stick to wine, as mixing forms of alcohol can not only result in nasty hangovers but can be seriously dangerous too.
