Do Hooligans Destroy England's World Cup Fun?

Unless you've been hiding under a huge rock in England right now, you'll be aware that the World Cup 2010 got underway this past weekend. If you've been hiding under a rock, poor you, because you've probably been repeatedly gobbed on by the football hooligans.

In my teenage years, I enjoyed watching England World Cup matches with my Mum on our 'goggle box'. The mood seemed to be a positive one, bringing families closer; teasing those members of the family who insisted they had no time for football, but by penalty time they were up and shouting at the telly with the best of them.

Now that I've grown up, I can't help but feel that the World Cup spectacle and England's so-called patriotism is being used as an excuse to behave like a total moron.

Walking home from the supermarket at the weekend, I clocked a large group of teen mums with their brood approaching, draped in England paraphernalia. I shuffled over as far as I was able to in order to let them pass, when I heard the smallest member of the herd utter "Move over, person!", giving me a nudge into the road of heavy traffic. I was gobsmacked. I turned to the mother, who didn't say a word. The drunk and disorderly appeared to be the largest majority of so called 'footy fans' that I encountered.

Is waving the St George flag while shoving innocent bystanders, vomiting, shouting at women to 'Show us yer baps, luv', followed by chants of 'In-Gggggggggggguh-Laaand' something to be proud of?

I fear the St George flag stands for something far worse: the Jeremy Kyle Show participants of this formerly respectable country.

England's society is crumbling. We have lost any kind of positive identity. Where is our self worth? Going out and earning an honest living is too much like hard work. No amount of flying the St George flag is going to convince me that we are a nation that has any pride in ourselves anymore.
