Every carpet owner knows the pain and anxiety that runs through your body when someone spills a liquid on the carpet and leaves a stain. There you are with the in-laws over and someone spills their drink on the floor! Ouch! It is painful and creates an awkward moment.
Not to fret my friend, here are some "do-it-at-home" carpet care tips.
First and foremost, the sooner you begin to clean up the spill the better. Your chances of removing the stain increase ten-fold if you do begin immediately after the spill has happened. This is very important; stains that go untreated can permanently damage your carpet and become impossible to remove.
For mild spill stains dampen a clean cloth and blot the problem area. Do not scrub, you will push the fluid deeper into the carpet fibers and make it more difficult to remove. If that doesn't work try using a SMALL portion of dishwashing soap or club soda and vinegar. These methods will work on tougher stains. Again, absorb with a clean cloth.
For best results leave a clean cloth on the stain and apply weight be leaving a stack of books or weights on the cloth. This will help for maximum absorption. Let the weight sit overnight. Extract any remaining liquid with a wet vacuum. Do not use a standard vacuum or you will damage it.
Pet urine spots require special enzyme solutions that are available at local janitorial shops. These work the best on carpet stains and carpet odor. You may need to call a professional carpet cleaner for some pet spots.
For wax spots in carpet you will need your cloth iron and a paper towel. Lay the paper towel flat on the wax spot on the carpet. Let the heat from the iron melt the wax and then absorb the re-activated wax. Repeat as necessary.
So, next time you are over at a guests house and a dreadful spill occurs, remember the tips that you have learned here. Use the techniques described here and be the hero of the party!
