Do More Insiders Think Outside The Box?
Pizza beer was the idea of Tom Seefurth and Warren Siepman
. What started as a rainy Labor Day project in 2006 went from being a hobby beer; to winning ribbons for homebrewing; to being brewed in Milwaukee's Sprecher Brewing Company; to already being available in 6 states, as well as Hong Kong. In 2012 "Mama Mia Pizza Beer" isn't just a novelty beer. It's a beer designed to be paired with different foods and used as an ingredient in various recipes. However, for the average beer drinker who wants to try something different, pizza beer is a "slice of life".
In 2012 some restaurants in Southern California are offering discounts based on the day and time of reservations. People can use websites such as Savored and Opentable to find the discounted times to make reservations at restaurants across LA County. Restaurant owners benefit because the discounts increase new customers. Some discounts are even offered during peak days and times to encourage more people to participate in this type of bargain hunting. According to consumer psychologists, restaurant owners also benefit from the fact people tend to spend more when they get a bargain. It seems discounts put the "spend" in spendthrift.
Harvest Cafe is owned and operated by "A Very Special Place", a not-for-profit corporation for people with developmental disabilities on Staten Island, New York. It's both a fully-operating restaurant and a daytime, occupational training program. Day-to-day operations are carried out by paid, trained restaurant workers (who have been taught to work with people with special needs) and AVSP trainees. The trainees start with one skill level - like folding napkins - and move to more advanced skill levels. The goal for some is to become paid employees. The goal for all the trainees is to learn the recipe for self-reliance and independence.
Advertisers have started to use obese people in their ads. In 2012 a Blue Cross Blue Shield of Minnesota ad shows an obese father reconsidering what he has on his fast-food tray when he hears his overweight son arguing with another overweight boy about whose father can eat more. Nike's ad shows an obese man jogging. In 2013 Subway will have ads celebrating Jared's 15 years as spokesperson by showing pictures of him at 425 pounds. Using obese people in ads to change the eating and exercising behaviors of 66% of Americans hopefully will be to all of our "ad-vantage".
