Do Not Try To Catch Your Own Web Content Errors
You are constantly updating your website with new information
, new products, and new info content and so on. You try to blog every day. If you are like most people, you write something, quickly run through it again for errors maybe spell check it then hit the submit button. Then, when you happen to re read the material a week later you realize that you have made an idiotic grammatical error there is a spelling problem that Spell heck would not pick up or a sentence just does not make any sense. Why does that happen?
Why we make mistakes
Most of us think much faster than we can word process so our minds are running quickly and as we are typing, we simply miss words that should have been in there. Also, many of us write the way we speak, which is not always grammatically correct. Plus, when we quickly re-read materials right after we have written them, we know what we wanted to say so we subconsciously fill in the expected words instead of reading what was actually written. That is why editors get paid good money. They understand spelling grammar, word structure and they represent a fresh pair of eyes on the material.
What? You do not have an editor for your material? Well you are probably in the majority most ecommerce owners do not have the resources for an editor to be at their disposal. So, you need to find other ways to make sure that the material on your site is letter perfect.
How much does spelling, punctuation and sentence structure matter?
In a words, lots! One of the biggest issues in gaining a potential customers business is developing trust. Trust is at least partially built on the credibility of your site. When words are misspelled or poor grammar is used, you look sloppy, uncaring and possibly not smart enough to know better. These are not attributes that build trust.
Self-editing
Here are some ways to avoid errors.
Spell-check
The first and most obvious way to look for errors is to use the spell-check function. This is a terrific tool because it not only checks for spelling errors but also highlights problems with subject verb agreement, number agreement, sentence fragments, punctuation and so on. But it is certainly not fool proof. If you typed you instead of your it may not be picked up. If you hit the f which is right next to the d when you were trying to write about a dart board, you may get a laugh but thats probably not what you want.
Print it out
It is amazing how different something looks when it is printed. You will be much more likely to catch errors if you see the writing in a different medium.
Read it aloud - This practice will help you figure out if the flow makes sense.
Review with fresh eyes
Never proofread something you just wrote. It just wo not work well. Even a 24 hour break will make a huge difference in how you can evaluate the material.
Of course, it is best if someone else can read the material for you but if that is not possible, these self editing tips should go a long way toward perfecting your copy.
