Do Ppi Claims Require Paperwork?

There are more and more PPI Claims being made each year now that consumers are getting

more information about mis-sold payment protection insurance, and realising that they had their's mis sold to them. For a lot of people though, the policy was taken out many years ago, and they do not have the relevant paperwork that came with it anymore. This leads to the question - do PPI claims require the paperwork?

It is the case that if you don't have the paperwork anymore you must get hold of it before making your claim. However, just because you cannot find it doesn't mean your claim is lost. The providers of your PPI policy have to keep a copy for 6 years after the END of the policy so if it is not in the very distant past, then you are very likely to be able to acquire a copy of the required paperwork.

The start date is irrelevant for the purpose of obtaining your paperwork. Even if your policy started twenty years ago, providing it is either still ongoing or ended within the past six years, your provider will have a copy of the paperwork relating to your payment protection insurance.

All you have to do is write to them and ask for it, they have to give it to you so do not allow them to tell you otherwise. They may charge a small admin fee, but within 2 weeks after making the request they are obliged to reply to you either with the requested papers or they will be asking for more information that they require to find your policy papers.

Getting hold of the paperwork may be less likely however if the policy ended over 6 years ago. The paperwork will most likely have been destroyed as there is no legal obligation from the lenders to keep the paperwork beyond that point. However if they have decided to keep it past 6 years, they have to give it to you if you request it. This means it may be worth sending the letter anyway as you may get a positive response.
