They utilize sub-contractors to handle any jobs that homeowners can't do on their own or have classes to teach you how to do it. If these two LARGE retail stores sell them for $150, how much less can a contractor buy them for direct from a manufacturer? Not much less, if at all. Let's say that they can buy them for $100 and only charge you $125. If they install it for less than $200, say $199, then they can only possibly make $100 in profit, right? If they have a guy they know install it for what is standard today, around $75-100 per opening, then they will only make $25 in profit.

Truth is that they could never install an average size window (3ft X 5ft) for that little and still stay in business. The only people who can do that are the guys who aren't certified, have no insurance and do not back up the installation with a warranty. No one in their right mind would take that kind of a gamble on their home. Consumer Reports says that the national average is between $700-1000 per window for an average 3ft X 5ft double hung window with Low E and Argon Gas with an insulated frame. You should listen to the magazine and only consider something in this range, otherwise you will most likely do the project again at a later date and wished you had just done it right the first time.
