want to become familiar with used car sales and how to handle used car dealers. Doing some research will pay off big when it comes time to make the transaction. It's like a game with used car salesmen because they want to outwit you and gain a nice pay check for themselves. There's nothing wrong with that because we all need to make money or save money.

Shop around especially on the internet

The local classified ads and used car alley used to be about the only choices when shopping for a used car. Today used car sales are a big business on the internet, whether buying locally or from across the country. A word of caution regarding making a purchase sight unseen via the internet, make sure you have at least a thirty day money back guarantee and try to have someone reliable check out your prospective purchase before making a commitment to purchase. If you plan on financing it with a bank check with them and see if they have someone, or can recommend a mechanic who can look over your car.

This is not a real popular thing to do because people don't wish to be held responsible in case the car doesn't work out. But a little extra cash can be persuasive most of the time. The transmission should shift smoothly, and if it's a stick shift the clutch should not disengage while the peddle is clear down on the floor. Engine should sound and accelerate smoothly without missing or smoking. Steering and turning should be smooth with no screeching noises.

Exterior and appearance is secondary

Once you've determined the car is solid and runs smoothly, it's time to look at the outside, especially the tires. They should have good tread with no bumps or cracks in the sidewalls. If the tires appear to need replacing you can bargain with the used car dealers for a discount. The glass should be free of cracks all around and the doors should close completely and the locks work as they should. Headlights, tail lights, and backup lights must be in working order.
