Men with diabetes can develop these infections because of elevated sugar levels in the urine that creates a beneficial environment for the yeasts. Conditions that hinder the immune system such as underactive thyroid gland, chronic stress, and HIV also help in making one susceptible to the infection. Though it's uncommon to be transmitted sexually, it is still considered as a risk factor.

The most common symptoms include red, small blisters with irritation, itching and soreness of the head of the penis accompanied by white clumpy discharge. Pain during sexual contact and burning during urination may also be observed. Sometimes symptoms are not even present. If your sex partner tells you that she is infected, it is best to go to the doctor. Other times these symptoms may also resemble those of other sexually transmitted diseases so it is also advised to seek for professional medical help.

There is no treatment specifically designed for yeast infections of the penis. Doctors usually prescribe the same over the counter medicated creams used to treat their vaginal counterpart. Applying these creams twice daily should make all the signs and symptoms disappear in a matter of seven days. Abstinence from sexual intercourse until all signs and symptoms are gone is recommended to avoid transmitting the infection back and forth between you and your partner and to ensure proper cure. Should the symptoms do not disappear after a week of treatment, go see your physician to test for other possible causes of these symptoms.

The most common way of preventing a penile yeast infection is to practice safe sex. It also advised that you and your partner get checked if either or both of you suspect or already have the infection and its symptoms. Observing proper hygiene, eating a balanced diet and maintaining a healthy lifestyle also helps in preventing these kind of infections. Boosting your immune system and eating yogurts may also aid in keeping the infection away.
