Do You Know - How Pure Is Distilled Water?

Do You Know - How Pure Is Distilled Water?

The question of how pure is distilled water can be looked at from several angles. Each angle will deliver a different answer. So, here's a look at the answers.

First, let me briefly explain the distillation process. Distillation involves boiling the liquid at a high temperature. Boiling kills any bacteria or other living organisms.

The container used for boiling is tightly capped. A tube or pipe leads from the cap to a collection container. As the liquid continues to boil, the steam is captured via the tube. As the steam cools it is converted back into a liquid and drips down into the collection container.

Minerals and other particulates are left behind in the boiling container. Any chemical contaminants will be present in the steam and in the final collection pot.

Double distillation is the same process done twice to remove even more impurities. Traces of chemicals may still be present, even after double distillation. But, there is little risk that minerals or other particles will be present.

Distillation creates and pure water solution suitable for use in industrial situations, such as in boilers or other items that would become clogged if the minerals built up in the systems. It is the recommended solution for cigar humidors and for some medical devices.

At one time, it was the right choice for laboratory work, but now most scientists choose deionized, because it is less expensive. If the highest purity available is needed, a lab will choose double-distilled, even though it is more expensive.

It is not suitable for other applications, primarily because it is unnatural. For example, water for fish aquariums must be free of the chemicals commonly found in publicly treated supplies (tap-water), but it should contain naturally occurring minerals. Specific solutions are available for aquarium owners.

Distilling is not the pure water solution for drinking every day, because it lacks the minerals necessary for electrolyte balance and because it contains traces of chemicals that are as hazardous to our health as they are for fish.

The best specific solution available for human drinking purposes is the multi-stage selective filtration device. The devices are sometimes referred to as purifiers or simply as filters.

Multiple stages are needed to ensure the highest degree of purity. Selective filtration is needed to ensure that hazardous contaminants are removed, but healthy minerals are retained.

That should answer the question of; how pure is distilled water for practically any purpose. Just remember that purity is sometimes in the eye of the beholder.
