?Do you know what Halloween is?
Halloween is a holiday celebrated on the night of October 31st.
The way it is commonly celebrated is with parties and children going from house to house,
going trick or treating.
Not only is it celebrated in the United States, but also in different parts of the world,
such as the United Kingdom and Canada!
How Halloween is celebrated today goes back to a time
when ancient pagans believed that October 31st
is the day when the boundary between the living and the dead dissolves.
However, since the dead could cause harm to the living,
people would go out into the streets wearing costumes and masks to ward off the evil spirits.
But that was then and times have definitely changed.
Now, we dress up and wear costumes for fun and entertainment!
Within just a few weeks before Halloween, adults and children go out shopping for costumes,
candy and pumpkins.
The most commonly wore costumes are the skeletons, ghosts, vampires, witches and devils.
People also wear costumes that are based on a television show or a horror movie such as:
A) Halloween
B)Nightmare On Elmstreet
C)Texas Chainsaw Massacre
One study shows, based on survey results,
more than of the american population will buy a costume for Halloween,
even if it costs more than it did last year.
People in the Halloween spirit will also place decorations around and in their homes,
such as carved pumpkins, gargoyles, skeletons and decorative candles.
I should mention that one of the most popular fruits for the holiday is the apple because,
it comes during the wake of the harvest season.
Now, for entertainment during parties, not only is there food and drink,
but a variety of fun games are played.
One of the most common games is, of course, bobbing for apples!
The apples are placed in a tub or a large similar type of container,
and they are picked up by participants using only their teeth.
If you are caught using your hands that is considered cheating.
However, if you do not wish to go to a party,
but still want to do something fun and daring,
go with a few friends to a haunted hayride or a haunted house.
A lot of people chose to go to theme parks that have a special for the holiday.
In other countries, Halloween is celebrated differently.
You will find in most Asian countries, people place food, water, and a lantern outside,
so those who have departed will have something to eat,
and a well lighted pathway as they travel during Halloween night.
In Czechoslovakia, chairs are placed fireside,
with each chair representing a living member and a member who has passed on.
The Swedes let their students take off,
and there is a shortened day for all employees.
Paying homage to the deceased is what the majority of different countries do during the Halloween season.
It is a fact:
A)The day after, which is November 1st, is considered to be All Saints Day.
B)While the second day is called all Souls Day.
This is done commemorating those who may be in purgatory,
with some type of hope that they will be cleansed of all sins and welcomed into heaven.
So there you have it, For most children and adults,
Halloween is simply a day to have fun, eat lots of candy, refreshments and enjoy yourself.
