Since it takes exceptional skill and expertise to perform this type of surgery, you may not be able to find a board certified plastic surgeon in your area. You may need to ask your primary doctor or breast cancer specialist for several referrals to professionals who perform the DIEP Flap microsurgery.

Keep in mind that not everyone is a good candidate for breast reconstruction surgery. Women who have had a mastectomy and still have enough remaining breast tissue can get the surgery to reconstruct one or both of their breasts. People who have already had some sort of previous abdominal surgery such as a c- section, liposuction or a hysterectomy; can still have the breast reconstruction done if they choose to do so.

Ultimately it is up to your doctor to determine if you would be a good candidate for this procedure. An in depth assessment of your medical history will be taken. Patients who smoke or don't have enough belly fat tissue are not good candidates. Smoking decreases the integrity, size and quality of the body's blood vessels.
