Do You Need A Permit For That Remodel?

It is rather difficult for the average homeowner to determine alone if the renovations they are planning require planning permission or permits.

Such issues are just another reason why it always best to work with a professional on any remodeling project, as they will take care of all that for you.

However if you are determined to tackle a project alone or with the assistance of a helpful neighbor, it is imperative that you determine the required paperwork before you begin the work.

Failure to obtain the proper permits can lead to heavy fines and in some cases even an order for the demolition of a new structure such as a deck, garage or pool.

The need for a particular permit for various building or remodeling projects varies from state to state, city to city and even town to town but here is a general guideline:

You May Not Need a Permit if You Are:

Installing a new exterior roof.

Installing a new hardwood floor.

Installing carpeting.

Switching out exterior doors.

Upgrading your kitchen or bathroom countertops.

Installing new siding to the exterior of your home.

Minor electrical work, such as the simple replacement of an outlet .

You May Need a Permit if You Are:

Moving or even in some cases replacing a kitchen or bathroom sink.

Demolishing a load-bearing wall.

Changing your home's roof line.

Punching in a new window or door.

Altering the overall footprint of your house.

Installing new electrical wiring.

A personal phone call to your local planning and/or building office is the only way to really determine what if any permits you will need to begin your remodeling project.

Often basic guidelines are listed online but as houses are all so very different the rules can even change from house to house.

If you are told you do not need a permit, make sure that you get the name and title of the person giving you that information, just in case they happen to be wrong
