It is rather difficult for the average homeowner to determine alone if the renovations they are planning require planning permission or permits.

The need for a particular permit for various building or remodeling projects varies from state to state, city to city and even town to town but here is a general guideline:

You May Not Need a Permit if You Are:

Installing a new exterior roof.

Installing a new hardwood floor.

Installing carpeting.

Switching out exterior doors.

Upgrading your kitchen or bathroom countertops.

Installing new siding to the exterior of your home.

Minor electrical work, such as the simple replacement of an outlet .
