Do You Need Bathroom Remodeling Considerations?
A hard-driving executive may dream of getting ready for work in a wood-paneled bathroom
, showering in a glass door/quarry-tiled enclosure, reaching for a hot towel encased in a warm compartment, grooming over a marble basin in the top of an antique wood dresser. An exhausted mother of four fantasizes about emerging from her private chamber serene and beautiful after exercising in a sun-lit, plant-filled alcove and relaxing in a whirlpool bath. A working couple conjures a streamlined layout that offers dual vanities and separate fixtures for simultaneous showering and bathing and a compartment toilet and bidet.
The bathroom is probably the only room in the house to which it is possible to escape. Once the door is closed, the room is magically transformed into a very private space, a brief refuge off limits to all but the occupant. How nice it would be if the bathroom itself enhanced the illusion of welcome seclusion.
It can. There are, of course, limits on what you can do to transform your existing bathroom into the truly special place you want it to be. You might have to work around your home's structural limitations or those of local building codes. The fixture model or color you have dreamed about may not exist at the time you're ready to start remodeling. You might have to make compromises in function and decor with others who will use the bathroom. And there's always the budget to consider. Costs can compel you to lower your sights and/or do much of the work yourself from installing fixtures to setting tile to hanging wallpaper.
But with careful planning and thoughtful execution of your plans, you can turn your ordinary bathroom into a room that satisfies both your needs and your desires.
THE FIRST STEPS
If you're planning to remodel existing facilities, the first step is to analyze thoroughly all of the requirements of the occupants of the house, evaluate what you have to work with, and then relate the two. By doing so, you'll discover both the shortcomings and the assets of the existing bathroom. The next step is to decide exactly what you can do to reach your goal--a process that requires a good deal of pondering, soul-searching, and research.
Be sure to discuss your ideas with other members of the household. The number of people using the bathroom, their respective ages, and their schedules will greatly affect the success or failure of your plans.
Although a single person or a couple might get along quite nicely with a lavatory basin, toilet, and shower stall in a small room, this arrangement is unlikely to satisfy a larger number of users. The bigger the family, the bigger the bathroom should be--not only in terms of square footage but also in terms of storage space, accessories and perhaps plumbing fixtures as well. If you anticipate an increase in family size, plan for that increase now. You may conclude that the only answer lies in augmenting the number of bathrooms in your home.
The ages of the various family members must be carefully considered. Toddlers have one set of requirements, young children another, and teenagers often have still another. Adults are generally predictable in their bathroom requirements for a good many years. But elderly persons will often need special aids for convenience and safety. Clearly, you must tailor the bathroom to meet the needs of everyone who will use it on a regular basis.
Schedules count also. When there is just one bathroom available to the six persons who must use it at the same time, the inevitable result is chaos. Additional bathrooms can alleviate the situation, as can a compartmental bathroom. In fact, merely adding a second basin to a well-arranged master bathroom can allow a working couple to get ready each morning with minimum mutual interference. Be sure, therefore, to keep family schedules in mind when planning your bathroom.
