Do You Really Need To Be Worried About Root Canals?

Root canal treatment is an endodontic treatment which involves removal of pulp from the core of the tooth

. Pulp is found in the canals present in the roots of the teeth. The connective tissues, nerves and blood together form the pulp.

When your teeth first emerge from the gums, they get their nourishment and strength from the pulp. After maturity, the blood supply in the gums takes care of the nourishment. So if the pulp gets damaged due to some injury or if there is an infection in any tooth and the pulp within, it is safe to have the pulp removed by a dentist.

When a cavity in the tooth is left untreated, it can spread further from the enamel to the dentin and then finally the pulp. This infection cannot be treated by antibiotics. It can in fact even damage the jawbone around the tooth and then form an abscess.

A damaged or infected pulp does not always cause toothache. Dentists undergo special training to identify infected teeth and damaged pulp. So you might be suggested a root canal treatment to save a tooth that is discolored or has become sensitive to hot and cold substances.

If root canal treatment is not done, you may need to have the infected tooth extracted. This may cause the neighboring teeth to become crooked or strained from chewing. Root canal treatment involves removal of infected pulp, treatment of infection and filling gutta percha in to the empty canals. That means your natural tooth is saved and you will also not need implants or bridges. Moreover, the root of the tooth remains intact while only the infected pulp is removed.

It is generally assumed that root canals are painful but in reality, modern technology has made sure that there is no pain. Dentists are of the opinion that dental fillings and root canal treatments are no different in modern times. You also do not need to visit your dentist several times for a root canal treatment. One or two visits are enough, thanks to modern dental techniques.

A root canal treatment not only helps preserve your natural teeth, it is also cheaper than having an infected tooth extracted and then get replacements like dentures or implants. Dentists also suggest that natural teeth are best for eating and chewing properly.

Another misconception is that even after root canal treatment; your infected tooth will come out later. On the contrary, dentists say that if the tooth is properly restored after the pulp is removed, and if you maintain good oral hygiene, your natural tooth will be there for life.

If you are pregnant, you might be afraid of root canals because dentists usually take x rays to determine the extent of infection. The fact is that the x ray is aimed at your mouth, not abdomen. Moreover, if you let your dentist know that you are pregnant, he will have your belly covered with a lead apron to shield it from even the slightest exposure to x rays.

So now you know what a root canal treatment is and how it is beneficial for restoring an infected tooth. If you have been suggested to go for a root canal treatment, you need not be afraid of it.
