The invention of the internet gave human beings a new arena for their offline practices

. Letters were converted to email, which was so fast and efficient that the offline postage system is now referred to as snail mail. VCR recordings led to podcasts, and newspapers have developed into news blogs. In the same way coupons have now evolved into coupon codes.

Coupons are little slips of paper in magazines, dailies, cereal boxes and other products. They offer discounts on products related to the location of the coupon. For example, a coupon on a box of breakfast cereal may offer a discount on a different cereal manufactured by the same company.

Coupons have to be manually cut out of their location. This means that people will buy the original cereal, newspaper or magazine in a bid to receive a coupon for a separate product.

The internet is paperless, but the concept of coupons is still important online marketing strategy. Since coupons cannot be cut out of a computer, a different method had to be found. The client could probably print out the page with the coupon and cut it out, but then they would have to scan the slip of paper and feed it back into the computer.

The system that was created is the coupon code. A coupon code is essentially an electronic coupon. How it works is that the client is asked to enter their email into a certain form. The site then emails the coupon code to the client.

Within the same email, the client will be given a link that redirects them to the location where they are to enter the code, and clearly instructed on how to enter the code. When the customer clicks on the link, they are taken to a different web page which will have words similar to : Enter the code here. They then copy-paste or type out the code manually. They are now able to access the discount or product guaranteed on the coupon.

Initially, a coupon was a slip of paper that you could use only once. The store keeper or product provider would take the coupon and give you the product or discount in exchange. A coupon code, however, can be used many times. To avoid this, coupon codes are programmed to expire very quickly. You can only use it a few times, or up to a previously specified date usually 3 to 5 days away. This way, the service provider is protected from excessive use, which can result in loss.
