Do-it-yourself Music Talent Publicity: Is It Possible To Do It Yourself?

There are many points I would like to address concerning when a band is deciding to hire a publicist

. A band needs press to create a buzz in order to attract Music A&R Executives. Publicity along with the right Music Promotions are essential to establish this buzz as is the band's music talent. In order to achieve the Record Deals musicians are looking for, they really need both music talent and the correct music promotion. So I will begin with my first point.

The majority of the label-ready, air-tight bands I know do not have time to do their own publicity. Most unsigned musicians have day jobs. They spend at least two nights every week rehearsing and two or three nights weekly at gigs. Whatever time is left over is devoted to writing music (which is their main goal, after all), practicing, booking more gigs, recording sessions and sporadic attempts at a personal life.

A musician's schedule leaves little room for writing press releases, let alone distributing tons of material and following up with phone calls. Further music talent doesn't necessarily help with writing talent Most often, they are lucky if they can return the calls that they receive within a day or two.

Some publicists do charge $1,500 a month for their services, but some do not. Certain writers will offer their services within an affordable price range because they are interested in the scene. Admittedly, they are fewer and farther in between, but there are professionals who want to help break fledging bands, not their bank accounts.

Lastly, many bands do not quite know how to market themselves. A publicist offers an all important sounding board when it comes to bouncing ideas. A good publicist will work with you as much as they work for you. When a band hires a publicist directly, the musicians have more say in how they are marketed than they do with record company's publicity department (however the main goal of course is to achieve record deals). The right publicist will help the band find the right way to "say it." I'm not saying that all unsigned acts are unable to do their own publicity. However, it is misleading to imply that it is a one-time project that can be accomplished in a few hours. Publicity is a hard word and it requires excellent writing, communication and organizational skills. Furthermore, one must also have the ability to follow up religiously, establish strong contacts and maintain good relationships.

New bands come and go in the space of a yawn. If a band cannot consistently come up with innovative ways to keep their name in front of the media, they should think about hiring someone who can. Bands that believe their music talent alone will eventually win the day usually eventually fade away.
