Do we really have democracy in India

Do we really have democracy in India

Do we really have democracy in India

From many months we could see war like situation prevailing in the middle of the earth...Egypt, Libya, Yemen, Bahrain, Sudan...However different may be one rebellion from the other but the underlying reason is the same- the real freedom- freedom from the autocratic rule- true democracy.

Our India is celebrating over 60years of independence. We boast ourselves about it but before itwe need to question ourselves "Are we really being ruled by the true people representatives?" Without blindly answering the questions let us review some facts.

Statistically on average only 60% of the registered voters cast their votes during elections. Here not to be forgotten point is 'registered voters'. So its clear that some citizens even dont care to register themselves. Notwithstanding this we know the rigging which takes place at the pooling booths - where another person votes illegally in the place of the real one. So counting on the abovenumbers we canstate that only 55% of the eligible citizens are casting their votes and utilizing their rights. Further these 55% votes will be divided among the parties being contested. Not to speakaboutthe Indian politicsit need not surprise us even if more than 20candidates contest from a single constituency. Not complicating our calculation and considering just 3 major political parties in a region, acandidate will be securing no more than 20% of the votes. So the startling fact is that those whom we name as 'peoples representatives' are those who get elected themselves by only not more than 20% of votes.

This does not stop here itself. The recently released cables by the wiki leaks make us clearly ashamed. They brought before us the loud evidence of the cash for vote system present both inside and outside the parliament. Ignoring about normal people its an absolute embarrassment for India to know that its elected representative took about 50cr to vote for in Confidence Motion.

Its high time to review all this. If just afair 20% of votesare adequate to get elected then this cash for vote system continues to remain. Black money remains to flow, which has its further economic consequences. This electoral system has to be changed. Only if it made mandatory that 50% of votes is required to get elected then parties choose fair candidates to represent them which automatically attracts disinterested citizens to cast their votes. Being a citizen not only means enjoying the rights but also one has to realize his duties. It is our duty to vote and that too for deserving and responsible one not considering illogical reasons like caste, movie star....Finally how the country is rests on its citizens. If we are responsible we get a responsible government. Lets make India a true democratic country. Be proud to be an Indian
