A few months back we had the opportunity to review the latest driver from Taylormade Golf. The R9 Driver hit the market with a bang and since then has been put into golf bags across every major tour and golfers all around the world.

Its Flight Control Technology gives the golfer the power to easily change the club's face angle, loft and lie angle simply by loosening a bolt in the sole, rotating the shaft into the designated position, then tightening the bolt. Hot on the heels of the hugely impressive R9 driver, the TaylorMade R9 460 driver combines the Flight Control Technology of the R9 driver with the sheer power and wonderful forgiveness, due to a 460cc clubhead and a longer, lightweight graphite shaft, which promotes greater speed on every shot.

Using Flight Control Technology, any golfer can easily use the TaylorMade to adjust the face angle, loft and lie, simply by loosening a bolt and rotating the shaft into the preferred position. This allows all golfers to enjoy a driver perfectly suited to their swing that promotes straighter and longer drives. The R9 460 also helps promote draws and fades with different settings, allowing for a side to side trajectory change of up to 40 yards, with the same settings, also helping to reduce hooks and slices. With a length of 45.75 inches and a D4 swing weight, this club is a very good speed increaser and it also significantly improves the height and distance of the ball launches. With the help of the special clubhead, enriched with a 60-gram Aldila RE AX shaft, a soft tip, a 65-gram Fujikura Motore F1, .335 inches diameter of the tip, the club's speed is definitely seemingly improved.

The High Inertia Tip technology intended to add even more speed to the ball, and a Flight Control Technology allows up to 40 yards side-to-side changes of trajectory. You can see why this club is really useful and powerful. At 460cc, the R9 delivers a little more forgiveness than the original R9 . Adjusting ball flight using the FCT wrench was fairly easy. My first opportunity to use this technology was with the Nakashima Htec 440 and 460 drivers using Nakashima's adjustable hosel. Both the Nakashima and TaylorMade drivers allow for adjustability in the same way.

TaylorMade claims a 40 yard swing in ball flight using FCT. While I'm not sure the driver will push that envelope with every player, I did notice differences in ball flight with the hosel set in opposing positions. That said, I still think most players are likely to find a setting they like and leave it that way, although the ability to make a change on the fly is convenient. While the R9 does present a decent appearance at setup, it's not quite as "classic" looking as TaylorMade makes it out to be. The R9 has a very slight triangular appearance, more round than anything else, but not classic by any stretch. If you're a traditionalist, you might be turned off by the subtle bullet shape. But when compared to a lot of other high-MOI drivers, the R9 appears muted.

Compared to the R9 driver, the R9 460 driver has a larger head, deeper clubface and lower and deeper-back center of gravity qualities that deliver a higher MOI for greater forgiveness and a higher spin-rate, helping low-spin players keep the ball in the air longer for increased carry and distance. Overall I think Taylormade Golf has a good thing going with the R9 driver line. The first driver set the tone with complete customization and this 2nd version gives some of that great customizing feature and adds a little more forgiveness for us amateurs. In our testing it seems as the handicaps go up, so does the fondness for the added forgiveness in the 460 club head version of this driver.
