Doctor Research Tips
Choosing a new physician is always a bit of a challenge
. Most individuals have questions they want to ask the practitioner, but are not always sure how to do so. If you are in the market for a new physician, taking the time to do a little bit of doctor research before you make the decision will help you feel confident that your health is in the right hands.
Once you have narrowed down your list to a few physicians, start looking online to find review sites that outline that particular practitioner's strengths and weaknesses. You will be able to read reviews or check ratings for various aspects of a practitioner's practice. For instance, one website might list ratings for wait time in the office, friendliness of office staff, and expertise of the physician. Another may allow patients and former patients to write out their reviews. Reading this will give you valuable insight into the way a particular physician functions.
Another part of your doctor research you should consider is the board certification the physician carries. Most valid physicians who are practicing in the United States will be board certified, so that is not necessarily the issue you need to research. What you need to research is the type of certification the individual carries. For instance, you may find that the practitioner is certified in family practice, pediatrics, internal medicine, or some other specialized field. If you have a unique medical need or concern, this may be of importance to you.
While studying the various aspects of doctors in your area, check into state licensing. If a physician has a lot of complaints against him, the state licensing agency or medical board may have record of this. This can be an invaluable tool in your doctor research.
You also need to make some practical considerations when choosing a physician. For instance, you need to learn how far the office is from your home, whether or not you can use public transportation to reach it if you do not have a car of your own, and what type of office hours the physician keeps. This will determine whether or not getting to your appointments is something you can handle.
You may also want to look into the length of time it takes to be seen by the clinic. If you have to wait weeks after your call to get an appointment, you may wish to choose a different physician. You might find this wait too long if you have an urgent medical need.
Some practices have on call nurses or even have their physicians return your calls. Find out what the policy is at the office you are considering. This can be an invaluable service, especially when you face a difficult decision about whether or not you actually need to visit the clinic. Having a medical professional who you can talk to about your symptoms before you go in is always helpful.
As you perform your doctor research, be diligent and thorough. Choose a physician that meets your health needs and also has a warm, friendly environment.
