Doctors Uniforms: What are These?

The word uniform can be defined in three ways. The first of which is that it's a characteristic set of garments somebody wears to classify him or her as belonging to a certain job, class or affiliation. Next, it also means a complete ensemble of clothes that would make others recognize the wearer. Lastly, it can also be described as a distinguishing way of dress that lets those who see it label the one wearing outfit as a member of a group. Therefore, a doctors uniform is a set of garments, worn by these medical specialists to easily identify them as belonging to the said profession. In this article, the different uniforms that doctors wear will be talked about.

The most commonly seen of all doctors uniforms is the lab coat. These are usually white, long-sleeved, button down, calf-length coats made out of polyester or polypropylene, and worn over doctors' casual outfits. Sometimes, lab coats can also come in specific styles that is custom made for certain hospitals and other medical facilities to be able to adhere to their dress codes. Among the two textiles above, polyester is the more widespread choice. One reason is the fact that they're very easy to sterilize and they're also crease-resistant so ironing polyester lab coats is not a need most of the time. Also, polyester doesn't get smaller with frequent wash and wear once its already been pre-shrunk so owners of polyester lab coats do not need to be apprehensive about their coats shrinking in the long run. This is also the reason why polyester is a good choice of lab coat when one wants to have his or her name, or the company logo he or she works for, sewn onto it.

Next to lab coats, doctors uniforms also include scrubs. These are either below the knee, short-sleeved gowns, or short-sleeved shirts with a V shaped neckline partnered with a pair of drawstring pants. Originally, scrubs were made specifically for operating room pursuits, and were only worn by surgeons and nurses during surgical procedures. However, as time went by, the use of scrubs for other areas of medical practice also became prevalent. At first, green was the only color they came in, but just as their popularity spread to other hospital departments, so did the hues and shades available to the market. Nowadays, scrubs are used by almost all doctors in every aspect of healthcare.

In addition, doctors uniforms would also include latex gloves, close-toed shoes, either a gauze or a synthetic textile mask, either a tie-back or a bouffant-style cloth cap and lab goggles.

Because doctors get to wear their casuals to work, uniformity really isn't plausible. However, with the use of lab coats and scrubs, doctors get to have an identifying look which easily lets other people recognize them as medical professionals. Thus, even if doctors uniforms aren't really uniforms per se, wearing them still gives health service practitioners the look of professionalism and expertise that gains the confidence of their patients.
