Dodge And Ford Diesel Engines

The average truck buyer has an outdated impression of the diesel engine

. Perhaps nowhere is this more obvious than with the modern Dodge and Ford engines that continue to shatter the many negative diesel stereotypes that persist. Diesel Ford and Dodge engines are not simply viable choices for passenger vehicles. In many cases, they are the superior choice, and not so loud any longer that you have to worry about waking the neighbors.

The most popular diesel Ford engines are in the Power Stroke series, which Navistar manufactures in the U.S. and in Brazil on behalf of Ford, and which includes the 6.0L, 6.4L, 6.7L, and the 7.3L. Recently, Ford transitioned manufacture of the 6.7L Power Stroke engine in house. Ford now builds and distributes it, and it is the only Power Stroke to include Ford software. These new 6.7L Ford engines will appear for the first time in 2011 models.

The highest profile Dodge engines are the 5.9L and the 6.7L Dodge Cummins, which are both part of the Cummins B Series. The B Series are extremely popular Dodge engines that the industry has used for many years in buses and in military vehicles in addition to the Dodge pickups. The 5.9L (360.0 cu in) was the first B engine to appear in a light truck, such as pickup.

The B6.7 is the latest B engine. Cummins designed it as a direct replacement for the 5.9L, and it is currently the largest straight-six engine used in a light truck. It employs 45% of the 5.9L components, and notable additions include a Bosch direct-injection fuel system, a cooled EGR system, and variable geometry turbocharger. Dodge began including these engines in their 2500 and 3500 pickups with the 2007 mid-year models. They deliver 350 horsepower and 650 pound-feet of torque.

Many modern auto consumers buy a vehicle with the intentions of trading it in three to five years. However, those of us who buy Dodge and Ford pickups are a different breed, throwbacks to a time when a father would hand his pickup down to his son, and then, if he got lucky, get to watch his son hand it down to his grandson. Diesel Dodge and Ford engines are particularly great choices for those of us who keep our vehicles for a long time simply because of the durability of those diesel engines.

Nevertheless, nothing lasts forever, and even the most durable Ford and Dodge engines fail. In these cases, what is a person to do? We could discard the truck, and purchase a new one, but there is another option. We can buy a used engine, which provides a great deal of value while at the same time allowing us to keep that truck in the family as long as wed like within reason.

Of course, there are some pitfalls when it comes to buying a used diesel engine. However, you can avoid them by targeting companies that verify mileage using vehicle history reports. Warranty is another critical aspect of buying a used vehicle, and it is particularly important to do business with a company that offers a one-year or longer guarantee with each used diesel engine that they sell.
