Does Having A Good Manager Matter?
A general belief about managers is that a manager sets the tone of the environment
. You feel lucky when you get a manager who always guides, provides direction, and share information. Such managers are priceless but every one is not lucky every time to get such managers. What if your manager is just the opposite !! Would you blame your manager for your performance or would you accept your manager as a person who may have strengths and weaknesses !!!
Do you think that your manager always guards you or keeps an eye on you? He says something and does something else, he is egocentric, arrogant and does not listen!! You may have many more such complaints. But do you know that complaining about your manager and discussing about his/ her bad behavior can only relieve you from your frustrations temporarily but will not improve your work conditions.
Remember, it is easy to fall into the trap of labeling people as good or bad and blaming others for all the bad that is happening in your life but it is difficult to find your own definition of success. Some of the tips that you can use to take control of your life in such circumstances are as follows:
Acceptance
The success mantra of life is to accept people and situations as they are. You cannot change people, how much you want, unless they themselves choose to change. So instead of directing your energy in the emotions of frustrations and anger, direct your energy in identifying the positive traits in your manager. difficult but makes a difference!
Each one of us have some strengths and weaknesses. Focusing only on the weaknesses of others, puts you into the trap of a blame game and pulls you from taking the responsibility of your own life. Have you ever noticed that the very same people who are very bad at times are very good at some other times? Theres an element of evil in the best of us and an element of good in the worst of us. So accept your manager as a person, who has good as well as bad traits that you cannot change. Because it is not in your control.
Self Reliance
Many people complain that their managers do not guide them properly. The best advise is to take the responsibility of your success yourself. Talk to your manager about exactly what you need to become successful in your work, take responsibility of certain decisions, prioritize your tasks and discuss your plans with your manager.
Your discussion with your manager with appropriate plan of action will allow you to find your mangers opinion about you. This takes you out of the confused state. You can confidently make decisions based on the reality of the situation.
Empathy
Understand that your manager may also be going through certain difficult situations in their personal or professional life. Also, sometimes good people become bad managers when either they themselves do not have good managers or they are promoted as managers on the basis of their performance but without any proper managerial training. Although, this understanding may not directly help you to improve your situation but will definitely help you direct your energy in the right direction and thinking positively about your manger.
So having a good or a bad manager should not affect your performance. Remember, each difficult situation makes you more strong and capable of dealing with difficult people and situations. If you are unable to deal with your manager and leave the job, tomorrow a new person may come at your place and may deal with the same manager efficiently !!
