Does Hydrolyzed Collagen Actually Help Prevent Osteoporosis?
Among the many purported cosmetic benefits of hydrolyzed collagen
, there has been increasing interest in using this health supplement for bone health and to help prevent osteoporosis. The question is, will taking it internally actually have any effect on bone density or in promoting long term bone health? Can it even be absorbed by the body? And if so, is there any evidence that the protein found in collagen can make its way into the bloodstream to strengthen human bones? Here we will take a good look at the purported claims and compare them to the hard facts delivered by scientific studies performed on collagen over the last 15 years.
To answer these questions, we first took a look at the nature of bone loss. Bones are made up of minerals (such as sodium, calcium, and phosphorous) and collagen, a protein. As humans age, their bones usually gradually lessen somewhat in density, resulting in frailer and more fragile bones in old age than in childhood. However, some people's bones are affected by this phenomenon much more rapidly than others, resulting in diseases such as osteoporosis and frequent bone fractures. We know that exercise has a big effect on keeping bones dense, and regular weight bearing exercise is one of the best ways to prevent bone density loss. Beyond that, however, is the possibility that what we eat, and the minerals and proteins we absorb from food and health supplements, may also help keep bones healthy, strong, and dense.
The first study on hydrolyzed collagen and its rate of absorption was published in The Journal of Nutrition in 1999. A study on mice showed that 90 percent of the collagen that has been taken internally is absorbed by the body within six hours, where it is sent to various parts of the body by the bloodstream. This study, and others that have followed, show that the body can properly absorb this type of collagen.
So, after hydrolyzed collagen makes its way into the bloodstream, is there any evidence that bone density is affected? A study published in March 2010 in the Journal of Bone and Mineral Research (JBMR) showed that in a 24 week study, the collagen did significantly increase bone density in mice. Bone strength was also proven to be greater among the mice who were fed a supplement of it every day for 24 weeks.
After researching these studies, it is clear that there is indeed a significant amount of evidence supporting the claim that hydrolyzed collagen lessens bone density loss and can be used as an oral supplement to help protect against bone related diseases such as osteoporosis. So, while it may always get attention for its purported claims as an anti-wrinkle aide, the real value of hydrolyzed collagen on your body may be performed beneath your skin.
