Since the early 2000's, there has been a back and forth tug of war when it comes

to which type of cardiovascular exercise someone should perform in order to lose body fat. I can see why this happens because I have a background in exercise physiology, however for the average person they are often left confused and misinformed. So today, I am going to try and divulge as much info as possible regarding the two topics so you can make your own choice.

Interval training is any type of exercise that involves stopping and going. Some good examples are running hills, sprints, or the interval programs on the cardio equipment. Steady state cardio, which is the opposite is jogging or walking.

When it comes to interval training, you are going to be burning mostly carbohydrates as fuel while with steady state cardio you will be burning mostly fat.

Problem is, in order to burn fat for fuel; it can take up to 20 minutes for all the various mechanisms to be put into place. Also as time goes on, your body becomes adapted to this and you burn less calories over time.

With interval training, your metabolism will actually stay raised for a longer period of time once you cease exercising and you will burn more calories in the long run as opposed to steady state cardio.

A good example I want to point out is look at a marathon runner and look at a sprinter. Which physique would you rather have?
