Does Milk Cure Heartburn? Learn The Facts Here

The tweny percent of individuals living in United States who experience painful and

unpleasant frequent heartburn symptoms would do just about anything to end them. Up until recently, people use to drink a glass of milk to end their heartburn suffering. It's now been determined that milk may in fact have the opposite effect.

After drinking a glass of milk, the pain and burning in the throat and chest does initially feel like they;re going away. It feels like the milk washed some of the acid that backed up from the stomach to esophagus and soothed irritated esophagus lining. But, some time later, you might pay for that.

While milk does soothe the esophagus initially, the fat content in milk actually triggers the production of stomach acid which may make heartburn even more painful.

It can go from bad to worse if you feel that the only way for you to fall back asleep after being awaken with heartburn is to drink milk. One of the worst things that a heartburn sufferer can do is to eat and then go to bed. Food is still being digested so stomach acid is still being produced and lying on the back will cause the acid to rest in the esoplhagus.

Another problem with milk is that fairly large number of people are lactose intolerant. That means that they do not produce enough of enzyme lactase, which helps the digestion of milk. The symptoms of lactose intolerance and acid reflux are very similar. You are probably lactose intolerant is you drink or eat something made from milk and you start to feel bloated, have cramps, experience diarrhea or simply burp a lot.

Babies and children can be lactose intolerant and this can hinder their development and be very dangerous to them. If the child complains of problems after having a glass of milk, then it might mean they cannot digest it. If the baby arches its back or throws up milk, talk to the baby's pediatrician about this.

A few options that can be done to try to fight heartburn and milk problems include: drinking low fat milk or only have a smalll amount of milk at a time. It is now possible to buy lactose-free or soy milk as a way to continue to drink milk.

If you are battlling heartburn, eat a slice of papaya or apple or drink papaya or apple juice, you could also put a little bicarbonate of soda in a glass of water to help. If you want to go to sleep, don't do it right away, wait and then prop yourself up with pillows.

Most people who have dealt with their heartburn for a long time know which foods can cause them problems and they don't eat them. One general advice that all sufferers agree on is that it is not good idea to eat large meals, that it is best to avoid all acidic foods, greasy foods and foods with too many spices. Tobacco, alcohol, chocolate, and coffee can also bring about heartburn attacks and aggravate the symtoms.

If drinking milk is a problem, either because you're lactose-intolerant or it causes heartburn, it's still important to add vitamin D and calcium to your diet. Not drinking milk causes us to lose a valuble source of vitamin D and calcium.
