Does Raid 1 increase performance ?
I know that RAID 0 is supposed to improve performance of a single disk drive access . But does RAID1 offer any such performance increase? Is there any performance difference on drive?

RAID 1 mirroring is an arrangement of hard disks that creates an exact copy (or mirror) of a set of data on two or more disks. This is useful when read performance or reliability are more important than data storage capacity.
A RAID-1 (mirrored set without parity) creates an exact copy or mirror of a data set on two or more disks. A RAID-1 is useful when read performance and reliability are more important than increasing data storage capacity. Moreover, RAID-1 provides fault tolerance from disk errors and single disk failure. One limitation of a RAID-1 configuration is that the memory space can only be as large as the smallest member disk in the array.

RAID1, for example, writes two copies of the data simultaneously on two separate drives. This is called fault tolerant because if one of the mirrored drives suffers a mechanical failure (e.g. spindle failure) or does not respond, the remaining drive will continue to function. The RAID 1 configuration is performed either by a hardware RAID controller or performed in software. It is suited to applications requiring high fault tolerance at a low cost and where a duplicated set of data is more secure than using parity. RAID 1 is popular for accounting and other financial data. It is also commonly used for small database systems, enterprise servers, and home PCs where a fairly inexpensive fault tolerance is required.
RAID 1 can be used together with RAID 0 (RAID 0 + 1) providing the advantages of both striping and mirroring.
For reading RAID1 can be fast as RAIDO because reading way can be similar. Better yet, since all disks contain all data, there is no requirement anymore to read from a specific disk; as both disks contain the same data striping can be done more efficiently.

So, RAID1 should be faster than RAID0 for random read, and at least the same as for sequential read.
