Does Your Birth Control Pill Contain Deadly Ingredients?
Certain popular oral contraceptives have allegedly been injuring many thousands of women around the world
. These birth control pills apparently caused blood clots, gallbladder disease, pulmonary embolism, deep vein thrombosis, heart attacks, and strokes. And all too many of them have lost their lives because they took these medications.
Because of this sorry state of affairs, a number of well respected law firms have been involved in litigation. Although no amount of money can replace one's poor health or the loss of life, because of their efforts more than a billion dollars in settlements have been awarded.
The damage these birth control pills can cause has been an ongoing concern for a number of years. As recently as August, 2009, the well respected British Medical Journal published a report on line that concluded that women who took these oral contraceptives had a significantly higher risk of forming dangerous blood clots than women who took other birth control pills.
The oral contraceptives in question contain drospirenone and ethinylestradiol. The progestin called drospirenone makes them different from many other birth control medications. This particular drug has the potential of elevating the body's potassium levels. As a result it can lead to a condition called hyperkalemia.
What is Hyperkalemia and What Are the Symptoms?
Hyperkalimia literally means potassium in the blood. Because extreme hyperkalemia can cause arrhythmia (potentially fatal abnormal heart rhythms), it is considered to be a medical emergency.
The problem with diagnosing hyperkalemia is that the symptoms are fairly non specific although they include muscle weakness, heart palpitations, and a feeling of malaise. The medical condition is usually detected when a patient gets a blood test for some other medical disorder, or if serious complications (or death) has resulted.
Hyperkalemia is nothing to play around with. Potassium chloride is actually the last of three drugs that are administered during an execution by lethal injection.
How Can Hyperkalemia Be Prevented?
The recurrence of hyperkalimia typically will involve removing the offending medication, reducing dietary potassium, and/or adding a diuretic. In addition binding resins such as polystyrene sulfonate may be prescribed by your physician.
What Should You Do If You Are Taking an Oral Contraceptive That Contains Drospirenone or Ethinylestradiol?
If you are taking a birth control pill that contains either of these two ingredients and you don't want to risk serious health issues and the potential of death caused by these medications then you should schedule an appointment with your physician at your earliest convenience. Discuss alternative medications with your doctor.
And you have suffered any of the diseases relating to these drugs (even if they have been taken off the market), you should consider taking advantage of the free consultation that is offered by many leading law firms.
