Dog and Training - Making a Dog Listen to you and Become Obedient by:Richard J. Barnes
Generally, there are two reasons why your dog will disobey you
. One, your dog is just ignoring you and becoming big headed, and two, your dog does not understand your commands. During dog training, it is always advisable that you establish commands that are clear and comprehensible to your dog. Basically, this is teaching your dog how to understand what you are saying i.e. your language. Your commands should ideally be one or two command words, and they ought to be very different from each other so the dog can clearly know what each command is. If you use commands that sound the same, the learning process will be very hard.
Still on point, upon selecting the commands you will be using, you are advised to keep the commands forever to avoid confusing your dog. In the process of teaching your dog the commands, you ought to also adopt the use of hand signals that are explicit to that specific command. Just like humans, dogs can train very quickly when they associate a command with a physical action. Actually, it is believed that dogs learn hand signals faster than they do voice commands. Just like the voice commands, you ought also to be very consistent with your hand signals.
How you present your commands is equally very important. Ensure you use sharp, clear, short, and repetitive commands, which they should also be very obvious to your dog that you mean exactly what you say. A playful and weak command will therefore not work here and your dog will at first think you are joking and they have an alternatively and secondly, they will have the assumption that you really aren't the alpha dog that you should be.
When it comes to your dog ignoring your commands, it means that the dog clearly understands what you are saying but they opt to ignore you. It can be very easy to tell the actual difference between a dog ignoring you out rightly and not comprehending your commands by studying your dog's body language. A dog that does not understand the commands will be submissive, maybe even start to crawl with its tail in between its legs. On the other hand, a dig that is ignoring you will look happy and confident and could even turn and walk away.
Thus, when training your dog, you should use positive voice tones and ensure you sound excited and happy while talking to it. You could even go down to the level of your dog and open your arms for it so that the dog will see it will get praise when it comes over to you. Within no time, your dog will start to respond to your commands. When it does, you should always shower it with praises, never chase it away when it comes to you or call it to you so you can punish it, this way, it will always associate coming near you with being reprimanded, and it will be running away when it sees you.
