Dogs Treasure Hunt
Dogs have an amazing sense of smell, so take advantage of it to play the following game.
Without your dog noticing, hide one of his favourite toys or a pot of treats in a small area of the field you are walking in (you may need someone to hold your dog for you while you do this). Return to your dog and ask him to find the hidden article.
Make it really exciting for him by giving him lots of encouragement as he tries to sniff out the toy or treats. As soon as he finds it, give him lots of praise and either have a really enthusiastic game with the toy or reward him with treats. Gradually make the game harder by hiding the toy or treats in more difficult places and farther a field.
Dogs Love Tracking and Searching
Your dog's natural ability to use his nose can be channeled by taking part in more formal tracking and searching events.
In these, a scent is laid for your dog to follow or articles are left along a trail for your dog to find. This is something any breed can do, you don't have to own a Bloodhound, and it is great to watch your dog following an invisible trail and doing something that comes so naturally to him and brings him such enjoyment.
You can arrange a tracking session for yourself or you can join an organized group.
If you want to do it yourself, simply lay a track in your garden or a local field. Walk by dragging your feet through the grass rather then stepping, and occasionally drop some tasty treats or a toy, along the way. Your dog will actually follow the scent of crushed vegetation, and finding the rewards will help keep him motivated.
Following The Leader
Encouraging your dog to follow you off lead is fun for your dog and can also help prevent your dog from pulling while he is on the lead. You can begin by dropping small treats by your side for your dog to eat as you walk along. Progress to holding the food in your hand, giving him a piece every so often. Change direction regularly and vary your speed from a slow walk to a run.
Try combining two aspects of dog heaven, chasing and food. Call your dog to you, and as he comes to you have a small treat in your hand.
