Let's face it: there's about as much public confidence in a mainstream parcel delivery service as there is in the government

One guy says it was delivered, another guy says it wasn't - and then the thing turns up in the back of a completely different van, smashed half to pieces and covered in mud. The advantages of using a small firm to carry out courier deliveries are enormous. First, and most important - a small firm simply doesn't have the room for manoeuvre that larger companies do. And in the world of parcel deliveries, "room for manoeuvre" often translates to "space to lose stuff in". With a more compact delivery firm, there are simply fewer chances for one's parcels to go missing. Second, smaller parcel courier companies tend to be friendlier and easier to contact than the big boys. Again, a function of being compactly sized: a firm running a few trucks doesn't need the tortuous telephone inquiries system that a multinational company requires. And that makes it a lot easier to talk to an actual person, in the unlikely event that one's parcel does go missing.

Heavy parcelcourier services, in particular, have a third (and appropriately huge) advantage that you just won't find in your average, run of the mill big name delivery company. Employees that are actually willing to lift things. Anyone who has ever tried to ship a large or awkwardly shaped item using a normal courier knows exactly what we are talking about here. Some huge guy turns up at your house and point blank refuses to pick your package up in case he injures himself. "Not insured," he tells you, which is basic industry speak for "can't be bothered". So you give yourself a hiatus hernia doing it yourself - and then your package gets lost or broken in transit anyway.

Using privately run heavy parcel courier services sidesteps all of that nonsense. A smaller company is normally still very much aware that good business requires actually making your customers happy: all a person using private courier services has to do is tell them in advance that the package in question is heavy. The right number of guys (or gals, for that matter) will turn up to do the job - all the sender has to do is sign for it, and wait to hear that it has arrived safely at the other end.

Frankly, it's about time the big guns sat up and took notice. Though if they don't, the little companies, who are actually doing heavy parcel courier services properly, will eventually take all their business. Serves them right.
