Dokra Craft: What Are The Steps Taken To Revive Dhokra Art And Woo Customers?

The governments of India and the handicrafts ministry of India have taken up a slew

of measures to put back some life in the once flourishing but now dying Dokra Craft. These radical measures have been suggested and are being implemented to restore Dokra Craft to its former glory and standing.

Step # 1

The Dokra designs seen in recent times dont have anything new to offer, they are as old as the hills and have lost their charm through oft repetition. So attempts are being made to incorporate fresh new designs, patterns, motifs inspired from traditional and indigenous folk culture or tribal culture.

A lot of emphasis is being paid to the cultivation of innovation and creativity so that the Dokra figurines can sport newer, fresher designs and patterns, never seen before. This is one of the best ways to woo customers, both in the foreign and domestic markets with the objective being to increase sales and attract potential customers through enhanced beauty.

Step # 2

To enable such a thing and popularize Dokra Craft both in the foreign as well as in the domestic markets, the Dokra craftsmen have to embrace and implement and learn new techniques, keep pace with changing technology and adopt newer methods of metal casting using changed and more advanced techniques.

Step # 3

There are also groups of Ojhas or Dokra craftsmen who need to be trained in order to keep pace with changes in technology. So the NABARD and the APITCOs Rural Entrepreneurship Development program are sponsoring a scheme which enables Dokra and Ojha youths to take formal training which will help them improve their technique of manufacturing Dokra art pieces.

These backward youths will also be given training in order that they can travel to fairs and markets in other states, far away from their home towns and villages and make themselves aware of the latest developments in Dokra technology and technology of metal casting. This study, traveling and training will enable the generation of marketable and saleable products.

Step # 4

To make Dokra Craft saleable, the end products or figurines must sport impeccable finishing. In short, the government is stressing on better finishing of the end products.

Step # 5

These Dokra craftsmen will also be provided with bank linkages, escort services, marketing tie ups with district industries centers and banks. On their part the Dokra craftsmen have to remain committed to their Dokra art.
