Dominance Style Behavior (DiSC)

Dominance Style Behavior (DiSC)
As promised, we are providing an in-depth analysis of each of the four DiSC styles. It is only fitting that we begin with the D-style, representing Dominance.
Often misunderstood but never overlooked, D-style individuals have the dubious label as the authoritarians of the workplace. While its dominant label carries certain negative connotations and misconceptions, D-style workers are a necessity in every successful team.
Individuals falling in the dominant category are direct and ambitious by nature. This is reflected in the workplace by their willingness to tackle challenges and embrace conflicts directly. D-style workers do not mince words as their frankness is often misinterpreted as brash. They do like to assert a degree of control over others. Contraire to beliefs, workers of the D-style do not like to micro-manage and control the works of their peers. They are instead result-oriented and only wish for the completed work to be of high quality.
With that in mind, two questions arise:
How do you identify D-style individuals in the virtual environment?
How do you deal with D-style peers virtually?
It is not difficult to identify those of the D-style in a virtual environment. Though you can't physically see them, here are 3 sure-fire indicators:
1. Directness/Frankness-One indicator is the directness and frankness of one's tone in meetings and conference calls. As mentioned, dominant workers will not mince words as they speak their mind before considering its effects on others. If they are not impressed, they will surely let you know about it.
2.Quick-Paced-The ambitious and result-oriented nature of D-style workers leads them to be fast-paced. You will notice that your meetings with them are quick and on point. They expect you to respond promptly or will get impatient rather quickly. In these meetings, the majority of time will be spent on work related topics, as they are not interested in much social exchange.
3. Take Charge- In meetings, you will notice that those of the D-style are the most likely to speak up, take control and express their opinions. They are most likely to take on the leadership role in conferences and dictate the direction of the discussions.
As I write this, I can't help but recall one occasion where a colleague of mine sold an assessment package to an overly dominant client over the phone. Everything about the client exuded Dominance, from his impatience at the sales pitch to the directness of his responses. Having quickly identified him as a D-style, my colleague started to talk ever so slowly. Within half a minute the client was irate with impatience. I held back my laughter as this carried on for about 90 seconds. Then with a smile on his face, my colleague recapped the entire conversation to the customer. When asked if he thought his fellow workers and employees would have appreciated the same impatience, the client became open to the idea of an assessment package. Though this incident was amusing at the time, it certainly does depict the importance of identifying another's style.
In dealing with D-style individuals here are 2 tips to help in the virtual workplace:
1. Be prepared-Before meetings and conferences, go through all the materials to be covered. Make sure you are up-to-date and prepared so that you are easily acclimated to a fast-paced meeting.
2. Stay on Point- When communicating, make sure you stay on point and relative to the work at hand. Do not attempt to engage in too many non-work related discussions, as your dominant peer will simply become impatient. Avoid repeating yourself and making generalizations.
You now have a thorough understanding of the D-style. Hopefully this will help you identify and create better work relationships in your future virtual dealings.
