Don Giovanni Opens The 2012 Opera Season At The Arena
The Opera is a particular show which is able to fascinate even the occasional and
most skeptical house; even if generally it is loved by an adult audience, the representation of an opera, thanks to the emotional transport of the music and to the powerful voices of the singers, is able to obtain approvals even from the young audience.
A location which is one of a kind, and guarantees always a fantastic show, is Verona Arena, which for 90 years has put on the amphitheatres stage the opera tradition, proposing year after year some among the most important international classics, which in the Arena become large- scale opera performances.
The Opera season in Verona has now reached its 90th edition and it celebrates with a premire of excellence. Indeed the 22nd of June the Opera season will start with the only opera by Mozart that has had a nonstop stage-life, which is the Don Giovanni: since its first representation, which was in 1787 in Prague, the opera has constantly been proposed in Europe theatres and in theatres all around the world and in the Romantic 800 it was also considered like the Opera par excellence and it was given an honour place in the Operas Olympus, next to the Faust by Goethe.
The Fondazione Arena di Verona chooses then a great classic to open Verona Opera Season and, as always, beyond dealing with the program of the festival, it takes care of choosing the singers and the directors. For Mozarts dramma giocoso, the Foundation will count on the direction of Daniel Oren: conductor already famous in the opera panorama, when he was just twenty he won the Herbert von Karajan prize, the most prestigious competition for young conductors, and since then he works with the most important theatres in the world like the Opra Bastille of Paris, the Staatsoper of Vienna , New York Metropolitan, the Covent Garden of London, Buenos Aires Coln Theatre and the Opera Theater of Tokyo.
Don Giovanni direction and the scenes will be followed by the magic touch and the obsessive search for perfection of Franco Zeffirelli, while the protagonist of the opera, Don Giovanni, will be interpreted by the bass- baritone of world renown Ildebrando DArcangelo, who in 1989 and in 1991 won the International Competition Toti Dal Monte of Treviso, interpreting Cos fan tutte and Don Giovanni, both by Mozart.
The singer is very attached to this opera even because in 1994, while interpreting Mesetto (Zerlinas bridegroom), DArcangelo made his debut at the New Yorks Metropolitan Opera and since that performance the collaboration between the bass-baritone and the American theatre, got very frequent and they made him a popular personage even at the American audiences eyes.
Verona Operas lovers will see then unique performances, first of all because of the high-level professionals that will go on stage and then also because of the special atmosphere and acoustics, which just a two-thousand years old amphitheatre can create.
