One of the biggest complaints for menopausal women is hot flashes (and night sweats) which are defined as "a sudden transient sensation of warmth or heat that spreads through the body creating redness or flushing on the face and upper body. Night sweats are essentially hot flashes that occur at night and cause excessive perspiration and discomfort. This is related to increased activity in the autonomic/sympathetic nervous system and results from declining estrogen production which in turn causes vasodilatation, a widening of the lumen of blood vessels (lumen being the cavity of a tubular organ, i.e., the lumen of a blood vessel,) which, in turn, causes flushing or hot flashes." (Source: www.menopausesource.com) Cheri's blog on the same site describes the problem in this way, "Everyone knows there are the typical sign of menopause. They come and they go. The flashes are like your own personal Caribbean vacation, without the luggage and the flight."
While traditional hormone replacement therapy is very effective, many women are not comfortable with using hormones because of potential side affects. Therefore, women are turning to alternative products to treat their symptoms. One of the most effective, yet least risky alternatives, is "wicking sleepwear." Wicking sleepwear refers to the ability of the fabric to pull perspiration and other moisture away from the skin, unlike traditional sleepwear fabrics such as cotton. According to Anne Best, Owner of Performance Sleepwear, "The quick drying feature of the fabric is what allows you to stay dry and wake up with a dry night gown."
One interesting feature about wicking sleepwear is that unlike traditional fabrics, the more fabric that touches your skin, the better. Adds Anne, "When your arms and legs are exposed, you do not receive the maximum benefit of having wicking sleepwear." This seems counter-intuitive to most women who are used to thinking "shorter-is better" when it comes to heat and clothing. However, when it comes to wicking sleepwear, more seems to work better. Another difference with wicking sleepwear is that it is very lightweight and has a smoother feel than cotton, which makes it more comfortable to wear while sleeping. According to Cheri, "It is so light that I hardly feel like I'm wearing sleepwear."
As Baby-Boomers enter into menopause they are seeking answers to age-old problems - most notably how to ease the discomfort of hot flashes. While not a substitute for lost hormones, wicking sleepwear does at least provide some symptomatic relief for this annoying and frustrating issue.
