The R4 DS is a slot 1 gaming device for use with Nintendo's DS and DSI consoles; it fits into the slot 1 on the console and takes a Micro SD/SDHC memory card for storing files such as games, movies, photos and music.

There are two main types of R4 DS, the R4 DS original and R4i DS, the latter being made for use with the Nintendo DSi console.

Now there is often some confusion when deciding on which R4 you need, the R4 DS only takes a normal Micro SD memory card which usually means you can only store around 2GB of files, to store more on a Micro SDHC you will need an R4 SDHC, this allows you to store up to a massive 32GB of files meaning you can store a great deal more!

The R4 DS and R4 SDHC work with the Nintendo DS and DS lite console, and are the original versions of the R4.

The other option for those who are lucky enough to have the Nintendo DSi console is the R4i, it offers all the same features from the original R4 plus the added benefit of many new ones, and it is also far more reliable. The R4i comes as standard with SDHC support, meaning less room for confusion when it comes to deciding on what you need.

Most R4 sellers offer bundles when choosing your R4 DS meaning that you don't have to go and purchase a Micro SD/SDHC on your own and they usually offer discounts meaning you won't have to pay as much as normal. Most people normally choose the R4 SDHC with a 4GB memory card as this seems to fit most people's needs, although it is worth thinking about it yourself before purchasing.
